in Laura non c’e und der weiße Neger Wumbaba (die weißen Nebel wundersam) sind ja nun alte Klassiker.

Besonders amüsiert war ich jetzt aber, als mir zufällig der Songtext von "Miss American Pie" unter die Augen kam.

Beim Hören des Songs verstand ich bisher nämlich immer:

"Drove my Chevy to the lady, but the lady was dry.

Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "This′ll be the day that I die
This′ll be the day that I die".


Übersetzt hieße das: "Ich fuhr meinen Chevy zu der Dame, doch die Dame war trocken.

Jene guten alten Jungs dort tranken Whiskey und Korn und sangen "Dies wird der Tag sein an dem ich sterbe".

Ich dachte mir, dass da eine Frau mit den Zechkumpanen nicht mitsäuft weil sie trocken ist, mit der alternativen Überlegung im Hinterkopf, dass die Frau frigide ist, man mit ihr nicht vögeln kann und sich stattdessen besäuft.

Und nun las ich den Text:
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "This′ll be the day that I die
This′ll be the day that I die",

und das heißt dann:

"Ich fuhr meinen Chevy zum Deich, doch der Deich lag im Trockenen.
Jene guten alten Jungs dort tranken Whiskey und Korn und sangen "Dies wird der Tag sein an dem ich sterbe".

Ich wollte schon immer wissen, wer oder was dieser "levy" ist, war aber zu faul zum Nachschauen. Bis jetzt. Danke!

" McLean chose to allude to this particular commercial because the Chevy was the mark of the regular American family in that period. For those not familiar with the term, a levee is a dam built to prevent inundations, but sometimes the term refers to the steep bank of a river. Driving the Chevy to the levee refers to romance, but the lyrics have a double meaning, because “The Levee” was also a party spot where McLean would listen to music with his friends. Sometimes, when The Levee would close (“the levee was dry”), they would drive across the river in search for places to drink in Rye, New York.

Alluding to the disappearance of something that once gave McLean great pleasure, “the levee is dry” is also compared to the evaporating American dream. "
